Water utility

asks for rate hike

COEUR D’ALENE – Troy Hoffman Water Corp. has asked the Idaho Public Utilities Commission to increase rates to Coeur d’Alene customers. The proposal would increase Troy Hoffman’s 146 customers’ rate from a monthly basic charge of $5.50 to $13.31 for the first 3,000 gallons of use.

Along with its initial proposal, the water company has requested an increase to charge $1.45 for every 1,000 gallons beyond 3,000 gallons. The current rate is 60 cents per 1,000 gallons beyond 3,000.

Troy Hoffman has also proposed an increase in reconnection fees, late-payment fees and returned-check fees.

The commission has suspended the effective date of the proposed increase for six months to review the application. This is the company’s first rate increase request in 14 years.

Possible public workshops and hearings will be announced later by the commission. The commission ordered the company to provide individual written notice to customers of all workshops and hearings scheduled.

The company’s application is available for review on the commission’s website at www.puc.idaho.gov. Under “Open Water Cases,” the application is case number TRH-W-10-01. Documents will be added as the case progresses.

CHaFE bike ride nets $30,000

SANDPOINT – The third annual CHaFE bike ride, held in Sandpoint in June, broke records in ridership and fundraising for the Panhandle Alliance for Education’s early childhood education program, “Ready! For Kindergarten.”

The event has nearly doubled in ridership each year. June’s had 197 riders registered, and only 10 didn’t make it on the day of the ride.

The riders from this year’s event raised more than $22,000. With other money raised by rider fees and underwriting, the event raised more than $30,000.

The “Cycle Hard for Education” ride follows a 150-mile route from Sandpoint north to Bonners Ferry, then east into Montana’s Bull River Valley before returning to Sandpoint along the shore of Lake Pend Oreille.
