In brief: Speaker to discuss caregiving

The Spokesman-Review

LOGAN – Marty Richards, an author, teacher and long-term care consultant, will present a workshop for caregivers, “Caresharing: Strengthening the Bonds to those Coping with Dementia,” on July 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Barbieri Moot Court Room at Gonzaga University School of Law, 721 N. Cincinnati St.

The workshop will propose a new approach to traditional care, showing how to move from independent caregiving to interdependent caregiving by engaging the emotional aspects of caring for a loved one.

Richards has been a social worker and teacher for more than 40 years. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Washington in 1970 and has spent her career working in the community, in long-term care facilities and in institutions of higher learning. She is a state-licensed individual clinical social worker and author of “Caresharing: A reciprocal Approach to Caregiving and Care Receiving in the Complexities of Aging, Illness or Disability.”

Cost for the workshop is $35 for professionals, which includes a five-hour certificate of attendance, and $15 for family members, students and non-credit attendees. A box lunch will be provided during the noon hour.

To register and for more information call (509) 473-3390 or visit www.alz.org/inland northwest. Registration deadline is Wednesday.

The program is presented by the Alzheimer’s Association Inland Northwest Chapter.
