Base washed away from coast highway

FLORENCE, Ore. – Transportation officials say they’ve found a void under the asphalt of U.S. 101’s southbound lane about nine miles north of the Sea Lion Caves on the Oregon coast.

Travel has been restricted to the northbound lane.

Officials say it appears the rock base beneath the asphalt has washed away over time.
