Gas leaks erupt in Cheney, North Spokane
First Street closed to traffic
A break in a one-inch gas line has caused evacuations and a street closure in downtown Cheney, while North Spokane fire crews went to Little Spokane River Road on a second gas leak, fire officials said.
The first leak at Cheney-Spangle Road and First Street forced closure of First and evacuation of adjacent buildings until repairs were made.
Three Cheney fire engines have responded to the 9:29 a.m. call. Avista Utilities repaired the line just after 10:30 a.m.
The cause of the leak was not immediately known.
A backhoe operator severed a gas line at Little Spokane Drive and Perry Road about 10:30 a.m. Two fire crews responded, and an Avista crew already in the area was also at the scene.
