In brief: Group will offer free school supplies

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., will accept applications for its annual Smart Start school supply program Aug. 2 through 6.

Families must be low-income residents of the Greater Spokane Valley area and have physical custody of the children receiving help. The children will receive new school supplies, including a backpack.

The families receiving the school supplies must also attend a Life Skills class which is available Aug. 12, 13 and 16, with sessions open during mornings, afternoons and evenings.

The classes will include information about budgeting, how to avoid predatory lending, a Kids’ Escape School, assessing low-cost health care, living green and more. Distribution of the school supplies will be held after each class session.

Valley Partners is also looking for school supply donations. The greatest needs are backpacks, calculators with algebraic functions, compasses, protractors, wide- and fine-tip markers, binder divider tabs and yellow highlighters.

Supplies can be donated at Spokane Valley Fire Department stations, Modern Electric and Vera Water and Power. They also can be donated at Spokane Valley Partners, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
