Eastern women earn 3 ‘EeeWoos’

After a season filled with milestones, the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team won three awards at the second annual “EeeWoos” on Wednesday at the Showalter Auditorium in Cheney.

The Eagles won the award for best team and head coach Wendy Schuller was honored as coach of the year. Junior Kyla Evans also received the Triple Threat Citizen Award for community service, athletic accomplishments and academic achievement. The women’s basketball team won its first Big Sky Conference regular-season championship and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament.

Winning awards for best athlete were senior football player Matt Nichols and senior track and field standout Nicole Luckenbach. Nichols also won the award for best record-breaking performance. His teammate, Taiwan Jones, won the award for best play for his 96-yard touchdown run against Idaho State.

Male newcomer of the year went to basketball player Glen Dean, while soccer goalkeeper Lisa Dimak won the same award for females. Seniors selected as EWU’s scholar-athletes were football defensive end Jacob Kragt and Christy Borders from the track and field team.

The event is an annual comedy and music extravaganza created to honor Eastern Washington University student-athletes. The EeeWoos are the brainchild of Davin Perry, the athletic department’s electronic media coordinator, and are modeled after ESPN’s ESPY Awards.

Golf

Idaho golfer Kayla Mortellaro has been selected as a Golfweek honorable mention All-American.

A sophomore, Mortellaro was previously named honorable mention All-American by the National Golf Coaches of America and the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year Award.

•Gonzaga sophomore Victoria Fallgren qualified for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship and fellow sophomore Genna Dodge is an alternate for the event.

The WAPL will be June 21-26 at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Ind. Fallgren finished in a four-way tie for third at 71 in the Chino Hills, Calif., sectional qualifying played at Los Serranos Golf & Country Club.

Softball

North Idaho College softball player Amanda Krier (Coeur d’Alene), was selected as a National Junior College Athletic Association first-team All-American.

Krier is one of 15 players to earn this honor and only the second player in the history of the NIC softball program to earn first-team All-American honors. The first was Angie Boardman in 2007.

Krier, a Lake City High School graduate, finished the season with a .482 batting average, 93 hits, 25 doubles, five home runs and 78 RBIs. She holds several career batting records for NIC.

Krier will play for Adelphi University in New York, a Division II school, next season.

Track and field

Washington State’s Chelsea VanDeBrake (Yakima, 3.95 grade-point average in education) and Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter (Moscow, 3.86 in English/secondary education) and Maike Holthuijzen (Boise, 3.94 in ecology and conservation biology) were named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII women’s first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Idaho also had four athletes make the men’s team – seniors Johnny Marler (Kennewick, 3.91 in computer science), K.C. Dahlgren (Missoula, 3.63 in sport science) and James Rogan (Eagle, Idaho, 3.70 in justice studies and sociology), and junior Paul Dittmer (Hanstedt, Germany, 3.82 in general studies).

Idaho sophomores Jeremy Klas (Moscow, 3.39 in secondary education) and Markus Geiger (Bad Neustadt, Germany, 3.78 in electrical engineering) were named to the second team.

Whitworth’s Cody Stelzer made the District VIII team in college division (non-Division I team). Stelzer (The Dalles, Ore.) has a 3.5 in biology.

To be eligible a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and a significant contributor to the team.

Wrestling

Five men with area ties are among nine who will be inducted into the Washington Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday in Spokane.

Former coaches Les Hogan, North Central High School and North Idaho College; Dean Largent, Deer Park; Rick Sicilia, a former Mead and Washington State wrestler who coached at University; and Ron Seibel, longtime former Moses Lake wrestler and coach, will be recognized for their lifetime achievement to the sport.

They’ll be joined by Pat Fitzpatrick of Spokane, a former official. The induction will highlight a banquet at the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center in Spokane Valley. A reception at 3 p.m. will be followed by the banquet and ceremony at 4.
