Youth sports: Gullickson earns Junior spot

Spokane’s Peter Gullickson shot a two-round total of 143 at Manito Golf and Country Club on Monday to earn one of two spots for the USGA Junior Amateur in July.

The national event is July 19-24 at the Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Mich.

Gullickson endured heavy rains for 36 holes, scoring 73s in both rounds. Clarkston’s Tyler Carlson shot a 77 in the first round and a 71 in the second round to earn the second spot at nationals.

The girls played 18 holes and qualified five players, led by Kent’s Catherina Li with a 76.

Zumwalt makes the grade

Ryan Zumwalt, recently graduated from University High School, was chosen as an honorable mention on Wrestling USA magazine’s Scholastic All-American team, U-Hi coach Don Owen reported.

The honor takes into account performace on the mat and in the classroom. Zumwalt was 39-1 in his senior year and state champion at 152 pounds. He had a GPA of 3.46.

Zumwalt, a state-placer all four years at U-Hi, will next compete for Cal State Fullerton.

Elite soccer program

Four Gonzaga Prep athletes are playing for Burnaby Mountain Selects this summer, an elite soccer development program headed up by Simon Fraser University co-head coach Brent Hoskins.

The players are Geoff Barnes, an attacker, Logan Rogers, a defenseman, Micah Duncan, a midfielder, and Keenan Sullivan, a defenseman. They will all be seniors next year.

The Burnaby Mountain Selects is in its seventh year. It’s a 10-week program that includes participation in one of the top college recruiting tournaments.

Signing

Steven Taylor of North Central, an offensive lineman, has signed a letter of intent to play football at Montana Tech.

New A.D. at Rosalia

Rob Hudkins is taking over as athletic director at Rosalia, replacing Terry Boxleitner.

Boxleitner served as A.D. the past six years. Hudkins will continue as the school’s boys basketball coach, a position he’s held for eight years.

Legion highlights

Mitch Bevacqua went 4 for 5 with two homers and a double to lead the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen to a 15-5 win over the Blue Devils last week.

Bevacqua started as a freshman at shortstop at Lake City last spring.

Junior Abrahamson of Chewelah threw a no-hitter against Riverside, striking out nine in Chewelah’s 12-2 win.
