Federer heads for third round at Wimbledon

Tennis: It has been a surprisingly arduous journey so far. After rallying from a two-set deficit in his opening match, Roger Federer endured plenty of tense moments Wednesday before beating Ilika Bozoljac, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the second round at Wimbledon.

Still stymied in the first round were American John Isner and Nicolas Mahut of France, immersed in the longest match in history. (Story, B1)

Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick dug out of an early hole and beat Michael Llodra 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (2).

No. 3-seeded Novak Djokovic beat American Taylor Dent 7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-4.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-4.

Justine Henin beat Kristina Barrois 6-3, 7-5. Fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters defeated Karolina Sprem 6-3, 6-2.

No. 15 Lleyton Hewitt, the 2002 champion, advanced when Evgeny Korolev retired trailing 6-4, 6-4, 3-0. American Mardy Fish had 30 aces but went 0 for 9 on break-point chances in the final set and lost to Florian Mayer 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

The only seeded man to lose was No. 7 Nikolay Davydenko, beaten by Daniel Brands 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8), 6-1. Three seeded women lost: No. 13 Shahar Peer, No. 30 Yaroslava Shvedova and No. 33 Melanie Oudin.

GU’s Fallgren advances at Publinks

Golf: Gonzaga University rising-sophomore Victoria Fallgren advanced to the second round of the U.S. Women’s Amatuer Public Links Championship in South Bend, Ind., beating 2009 stroke-play medalist Tiffany Lua 3 and 1. Qualifying medalist Ariya Jutanugarn also easily advanced, beating Canada’s Augusta James 7 and 6.

Williams shares lead at Men’s Amateur: Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, shares the 36-hole lead at the Washington State Gold Association Men’s Amateur Championship in Kingston, Wash. Williams and T.J. Bordeaux of Tacoma each shot even-par 72 and sit at 3-under 141.

Canucks’ Sedin earns MVP over Ovechkin

NHL: Henrik Sedin wrecked Alex Ovechkin’s bid for an NHL MVP three-peat.

The Vancouver Canucks star, who had a league-best 83 assists, captured the Hart Trophy during the NHL’s awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers won the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year.

Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s most outstanding coach.

Clemson wins, moves closer to CWS finals

Miscellany: Clemson took advantage of Oklahoma’s fourth-inning pitching meltdown and a costly error in the fifth to beat the Sooners 6-4 at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The Tigers (45-23) move to the Bracket 2 championship game on Friday against either Oklahoma (50-17) or South Carolina.

TCU eliminates Florida State: Matt Curry hit a go-ahead grand slam in TCU’s eight-run eighth inning and the Horned Frogs eliminated Florida State from the College World Series with a 11-7 victory.

The dramatic win carries the Frogs to the Bracket 1 championship game in their first CWS appearance. They will play UCLA on Friday, needing to beat the Bruins twice to reach next week’s best-of-3 finals.

Jackson leans toward retirement: The 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson said he is leaning toward retirement. After a full season of speculation on his health and future, Jackson will wait for the results of another battery of medical tests before informing Lakers owner Jerry Buss of his final decision late next week.

Jackson’s career record is 1,098-460, winning at least 55 games in 15 of his 19 seasons.

Sooners, Aggies also got invites from SEC: University of Oklahoma President David Boren said that his school and Texas A&M both received invitations to join the Southeastern Conference during the last round of conference realignment.

Although Oklahoma ended up remaining in the Big 12, Boren said the Sooners had offers from both the SEC and the Pac-10.

USA Swimming official touted Uchiyama: A high-ranking USA Swimming official recommended former national team director Everett Uchiyama for a job, less than a year after Uchiyama was banned for life by the organization for having a sexual relationship with an underage swimmer, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press.

Pat Hogan, the managing director of club development, told a consultant for the Country Club of Colorado that Uchiyama was USA Swimming’s most popular official, and that his decision to quit was a “personal choice.”

Horse racing returning to Kalispell: Horse racing will be held in Kalispell, Mont., this summer for the first time in five years.

The Montana Board of Horse Racing approved a late application for races on Aug. 21-22 – the final two days of the Northwest Montana Fair.
