Zags get past Bradley

Gonzaga rallied for three runs in the eighth inning Friday to beat Bradley 8-6 at the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio.

Cameron Edman tied the game at 6 with an RBI single and Drew Heid’s two-run single gave the Bulldogs (6-6) the lead. Edman had two hits and three RBIs on the day, including his second home run of the season.

Billy Moon recorded the final three outs to earn his first save of the season for Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs play tournament host Notre Dame this morning at 10.

•Texas A&M scored three runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 win over Washington Sate in College Station, Texas.

Matt Fanelli went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (9-2), and Brett Jacobs also went 3 for 4.

Track and field

Washington State freshman Holly Parent tied for 12th place in the high jump and Eastern Washington senior Nicole Lukenbach finished 14th in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Lukenbach was the first Eastern woman to compete at the NCAA indoors since 1995.

WSU’s Trent Arrivey competes today in the high jump.

•Emmanuel Bofa of Whitworth, runner-up in last year’s 800 meters, failed to advance out of the prelims at the NCAA Division III meet at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

Golf

Idaho’s men finished second and Gonzaga finished third at the rain-shortened Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore.

Notre Dame won the tournament with a 36-hole team score of 622. The Vandals were 12 shots behind at 634, and the Bulldogs shot 639.

Idaho’s David Nuhn finished second, shooting a 9-over 151 for the tournament, and teammate Stefan Richardson was fourth at 153.

Gonzaga’s Derek Cheney and Jason Azzarito tied for fifth at 156.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s men’s team opened its season by winning one race and placing second in two others at the UC San Diego/San Diego Regatta.

The Bulldogs finished first in the Junior Varsity 8+, overtaking the UC San Diego boat midway through the 2,000-meter course and finishing in 6:30.82. Gonzaga finished second in the Varsity 8+ (6:18.24) and Freshman 8+ (6:39.80).

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane lost its three games at the Phoenix CC Spring Classic. CCS lost 6-1 to Illinois Central College, 12-7 to Scottsdale and 7-0 to Mesa.

Shelby Bethel (University HS) pitched a solid first game but took the loss. She allowed four unearned runs and struck out six while walking none.

In the second game, the Sasquatch led 6-2 in the sixth inning before committing three errors during a five-run inning.

Basketball

Morris Anderson scored 23 points to lead four Vikings in double figures as No. 15 Western Washington beat Central Washington 84-70 in Bellingham in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament.
