Injured Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will miss the 2010 season because of a right elbow injury that will require surgery. Nathan, who leads the major leagues with 246 saves since 2004, made the decision after playing catch for 10 minutes on Sunday. Nathan hopes to have Tommy John surgery within two weeks to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
■Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow is in good condition at a local hospital after being hit in the back of the neck with a puck during Sunday’s game against Minnesota. Langkow has movement in all his extremities and is undergoing X-rays and more tests. Langkow was not moving as he was removed from the ice on a stretcher.
Expected Olympic executives will attend a memorial in Georgia for the luger who was killed on the first day of the Vancouver Games. John Furlong, the head of the Vancouver organizers, was invited to Tuesday’s memorial by the family of Nodar Kumaritashvili. The International Luge Federation, which is reviewing the accident, is also expected to send a representative.
•New baseball players’ union head Michael Weiner anticipates talks with Major League Baseball on a new collective bargaining agreement will begin by spring training or perhaps a bit earlier next year. The current agreement expires in December 2011.
Recommended The NFL’s competition committee has recommended that a team yielding a field goal on the first series of an overtime period will then get a possession. If that team scores a touchdown, it wins. If it fails to score, it loses. But if it also kicks a field goal, the game will continue under the current sudden-death rules.
Discussed Baseball commissioner Bud Selig met with Oakland Athletics officials in regard to a new stadium but said there is no timetable on when a committee he formed to study the issue will put forth a recommendation on how to proceed. Selig met with San Francisco Giants officials a week ago to discuss territorial rights. The A’s have considered a move to San Jose, among other Bay Area locations.
