W. Virginia loses point guard

Men’s basketball: West Virginia point guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant broke his right foot during practice Tuesday and will miss the rest of the NCAA tournament.

The second-seeded Mountaineers, who won the Big East tournament, play 11th-seeded Washington on Thursday night in Syracuse, N.Y., in the East Regional semifinals.

Bryant has started 31 games and averages 9.3 points and is second on the team in assists (3.1) and 3-pointers (40).

He will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by junior Joe Mazzulla, who is more of a playmaker than a scorer. Mazzulla averages 2.2 points and 2.3 assists per game.

Vandersloot a Wade finalist

Women’s basketball: Gonzaga University women’s basketball junior point guard Courtney Vandersloot was chosen as one of 12 finalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy as the list was announced Tuesday by the State Farm Wade Trophy Committee.

The announcement of the winner will be made April 3 at the national semifinal game in San Antonio.

The Wade Trophy, named after the late, legendary three-time national champion, Delta State University coach Lily Margaret Wade, debuted in 1978 as the first women’s national player of the year award in college basketball.

Vandersloot, the 2010 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, has helped Gonzaga to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. She leads the nation in assists per game at 9.4 per contest, is sixth in steals per game (3.5) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2).

Eastern extends Schuller’s pact

Women’s basketball: Fresh off the most successful season in decades, including a first Big Sky Conference regular-season championship, Eastern Washington has rewarded women’s basketball coach Wendy Schuller with a four-year contract extension.

The Eagles were 19-11 in Schuller’s ninth season, including 12-4 in league, which put the league tournament in Cheney for the first time. Although the Eagles lost in the semifinals, they earned a berth in the Women’s NIT, their first post-season appearance since the 1987 team made the school’s only NCAA appearance.
