Pirates extend win streak
Whitworth set a record for most runs in a single game during an 18-5 win over Edgewood College, then came back to beat Calvin College 4-1 to earn its longest winning streak in three seasons on its final day of competition Wednesday at the Tucson Softball Invitational at Lincoln Park in Tuscon, Ariz.
The sixth straight win for the Pirates (7-9) is Whitworth’s longest streak since winning 16 in a row during the 2007 season.
Healther Hesselgesser went 3-3 with five runs batted in and three runs scored, hitting a three-run home run in the 14-run second inning against Edgewood.
Track and field
Washington State freshman Jasmine Johnson-McKeown is in second place after the first day of the heptathlon at the 14th Annual Cal Multi Meet at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field in Berkeley, Calif.
Johnson-McKeown has the top mark in the shot put at 41-feet, 111/4 inches and has 3,063 points, 133 points behind leader Cassie Merkley of Idaho State. WSU’s Angela Jensen is in third place with 2,988 points.
WSU’s Kyle Schauble is in seventh with 3,399 points after the first day of the decathlon. Competition resumes today.
