In brief: Stop-smoking groups planned

SPOKANE COUNTY – Community Health and Education Resources will hold two free Quit and Win tobacco support groups, as a resource for local residents to help quit smoking.

The meetings will be held at Providence Holy Family Hospital in the Health Education Center, 5633 N. Lidgerwood St., on Monday from 6 to 7 p.m., and at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, in the auditorium, 104 W. Fifth Ave., on May 26 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Garden class will repeat May 23

MANITO – “Through the Year with Color and Interest” will be held for a second time, because of high demand, on May 23 at 1 p.m. at the Manito Meeting Room just east of Gaiser Conservatory.

The garden class is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required as space is limited.

CYT to present ‘Pocahontas’

RIVERSIDE – Christian Youth Theater-Spokane will debut “The Legend of Pocahontas” on May 21 at the Bing Crosby Theater at 7 p.m.

The CYT-Spokane cast, ages 6 to 18, will perform a fully staged musical production that is historically accurate, with original songs and dances. The CYT musical tells the story of the Algonquin Indian tribe and their princess, Pocahontas. The production has a cast of 81 area children and volunteer musicians.

Other performance dates and times include May 22, May 28, and May 29 at 7 p.m., and May 22, May 29, and May 30 at 3 p.m.

Tickets in advance are $10 for adults and $9 for seniors and children 12 and younger. Tickets at the door are $13.

Frameworks plans meeting

SHADLE – Community Frameworks will hold an informational meeting about homeownership opportunities and affordable mortgage lending for first-time homebuyers on Tuesday at the Shadle Branch Library, 2111 W. Wellesley Ave., at 6 p.m.

During the meeting, Community Frameworks will discuss Valley Pointe, the new town home community being developed near University City in Spokane Valley. Participants can learn how they can purchase a new-construction home with affordable financing and down-payment assistance.

Corbin center to hold high tea

EAST CENTRAL – The Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., will host Springtime Elegance High Tea on May 14, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Park Place Senior Living will provide the tea, and Finders Keepers will hold a Comfort Keepers accessory sale. The event also includes best-hat and best-table competitions and five makeovers. Cheryl Smith, community outreach coordinator, will be the main speaker.

Tickets are $12 per person in advance and $15 at the door.

SPOKANE VALLEY – Registration is openfor the fall Spokane Valley Youth Soccer season for ages 4 to 15.
