Mead claims GSL softball title

Mead clinched the Greater Spokane League softball championship Thursday, tallying 18 hits to slug its way past Rogers 13-8 at Mead.

Regin Gallagher and Lauren Stewart collected four hits apiece while combining for five runs batted in for the Panthers (17-2). Freshman Hannah Beloved improved to 4-0, striking out two and walking two.

Devan Burney hit a two-run homer for the Pirates (5-13).

In other GSL games, Rachel Head had four hits and two stolen bases and Portia Schuller added three hits and two RBIs as Lewis and Clark (9-9) held second-place University (14-3), to just four hits in winning 3-1 at U-Hi. Sammy Beemer went the distance for the Tigers. The Titans fell 11/2 games behind Mead with one game left. … M’Liss Powles went 3 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs and Mt. Spokane (9-9) scored three runs in the fourth and the fifth innings to overtake Gonzaga Prep (9-9) 10-7 at Mt. Spokane. … Angela Routt had four hits and two runs scored and North Central (10-8) scored five in the seventh to power past host East Valley (6-12) 8-2. … Erika Santarossa allowed no runs on six hits while striking out five and Kayley Kees added two hits and an RBI as Ferris (7-12) defeated host Central Valley (7-10) 4-0.

•Rachel Meagley pitched a one-hit shutout to lift West Valley (12-6, 8-4) to a 1-0 victory at Clarkston (7-6, 5-5) in the opener of a Great Northern League doubleheader. The Bantams won the second game 1-0 on Riley Swanson’s one-hitter.

•Richelle Ashburn allowed one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts and host Post Falls (12-6, 5-4) took the lead for good with a two-run first inning, beating Coeur d’Alene (19-6, 6-5) 3-1 in the Inland Empire League 5A.

•Megan Hill went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI and Timberlake (10-8, 8-1) scored three in the seventh to edge host St. Maries (10-6, 4-4) 10-8 in the Intermountain League.

Boys soccer

Joel Linafelter’s goal in the 24th minute held up as visiting Medical Lake (12-3-1, 11-3) handed Cheney (14-2, 13-1) its first loss of the season in Great Northern League play, winning 1-0 in the regular-season finale.

The Blackhawks hold the No. 1 seed in the District 7 2A tournament and will play Thursday. ML will take the No. 3 seed and host West Valley on Wednesday.

In other GNL action, Victor Tardelli scored four goals and Deer Park (9-6, 8-6) outshot host Colville 18-9 (2-14, 0-14) to win 6-1. DP will be the No. 4 district seed, playing Clarkston on Wednesday. … Kevin Spangenberg scored in each half to lift Pullman (11-5, 11-3) to a 2-0 victory over host West Valley (7-9, 5-9). Pullman moved into the No. 2 district spot with 33 points and will play Thursday. … Jordan Semanko had one goal and two assists as Clarkston (7-8-1, 6-8) beat visiting Riverside (2-14, 2-12) 8-3.

Golf

Nick Thurston of Mt. Spokane shot a 2-under-par 70 to earn the District 8 3A boys title at the MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake. The top 20 golfers advance to the regional tournament, next Friday at Wandermere.

•Tyler Carlson earned medalist honors with a 2-under 70 and teammate Bo Baker shot a 71 to propel Clarkston’s boys (390) to a two-shot victory over Colville at Dominion Meadows Golf Course in Colville. Pullman’s Paige Whidbee (75) and Jennifer Sorensen (79) finished 1-2 among girls, but Colville (461) edged the Greyhounds by three shots for the team title.

•Moscow’s Katie Greear shot a 3-over 75 to earn medalist honors and her Bears took the team title with a score of 336 at the Lake City Invite at Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course in Coeur d’Alene. CdA took the boys title, but Post Falls’ Jacy Yoshida earned the individual title with a 3-under 69.
