Accuracy watch
Sunday’s piece on the county jail system by Associate Editor Gary Crooks contained a high-end 2035 population projection for Spokane County that requires clarification.
The county first calculated a projection based on the state’s 2030 estimate (which is as far as it goes), plus 12 percent up to 2035. That figure – 687,349 – was used in David Bennett Consulting’s “Needs Assessment” report. Since then, the county has been asked for a medium projection, which reduces the projected population to 647,636.
Dr. Patrick Jones of Eastern Washington University, who maintains the Spokane Community Indicators website, says the population would be closer to 620,000, based on the county’s growth rate over the past decade.
