Memorial Cup opens with rout

BRANDON, Manitoba – The Windsor Spitfires scored four unanswered goals in the first five minutes Friday to open the Memorial Cup, defeating the Brandon Wheat Kings 9-3.

The Spitfires put the game out of reach early as Kenny Ryan, Scott Timmins, Adam Henrique and Taylor Hall all recorded goals within the first five minutes of play.

Hall scored his second goal at 18:23, putting Windsor up 5-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Wheat Kings head coach Kelly McCrimmon gave the nod to backup goaltender Jacob De Serres in the second period. But the change did little to disrupt the Spitfires, who extended the lead to 9-1 in the period.

Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves to earn the win in goal for the Spitfires.
