Hitmen rally for win

BRANDON, Manitoba – The Calgary Hitmen overcame a 3-0 second-period deficit and a 4-2 third-period deficit to win their opener Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Cup.

The Western Hockey League champion Hitmen beat the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Moncton Wildcats 5-4.

Tyler Shattock broke a 4-4 tie by scoring the winner with 1:18 remaining in the third period.

A Moncton clearing attempt around the back boards took a strange bounce in front of the net, where Shattock fired it home.

Tyler Fiddler, Joel Broda, Giffen Nyren and Kris Foucault also scored for Calgary, while Jimmy Bubnick chipped in a pair of assists.

Calgary was outshot 38-27, including 13-3 in the first period, as Martin Jones made 34 saves in the win.

Calgary shares first place in the Memorial Cup round-robin standings at 1-0 with Windsor. Moncton and the host Brandon Wheat Kings are 0-1.

The Hitmen will face the Ontario Hockey League champion Spitfires on Monday night.

Today’s game pits Brandon against Moncton.
