Black Widows host Brandi Chastain
Brandi Chastain, best known for her 1999 World Cup winning penalty kick and subsequent shirt removal, will be in Spokane on Sunday with the California Storm to take on the Spokane Black Widows.
Game time is 3 p.m. at Joe Albi Stadium. Tickets can be purchased through ticketswest.com.
Chastain will sign autographs and take pictures with young soccer players. A limited number of Spokane Black Widow jerseys will be available for sale at the game.
The game will mark the Black Widows’ debut. They are one of more than 50 teams that makes up the five conferences in the Women’s Premier Soccer League, the largest women’s soccer league in the world.
Monitors needed for Hoopfest
Basketball: Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is closing in on 7,000 teams for this season event June 26-27.
Hoopfest operations manager Chad Smith said that many teams will require 626 monitors on nearly 440 courts in downtown Spokane.
Smith said Hoopfest will begin court monitor orientations on June 8 and hopes to get most of the monitors by that time. Those interested can sign up at spokanehoopfest.net. Court monitors receive a package of Nike apparel for their efforts.
Tillman, Howard in Hall of Fame
Football: The late Pat Tillman and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard are among the 14 newly elected members of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Tillman played linebacker for Arizona State from 1994-97 and gave up an NFL career to enlist in the Army in 2002. He was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2004.
Howard was a wide receiver for Michigan and won the Heisman 1991.
The other players in the new class include defensive lineman Dennis Byrd of North Carolina State; center Ronnie Caveness of Arkansas; defensive lineman Ray Childress of Texas A&M; guard Randy Cross of UCLA; running back Sam Cunningham of Southern California; quarterback Mark Herrmann of Purdue; receiver Clarkston Hines of Duke; defensive back Chet Moeller of Navy; halfback Jerry Stovall of LSU; and linebacker Alfred Williams of Colorado.
Coaches include Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez and Alabama’s Gene Stallings.
