In brief: Yankees move first, contact Lee’s agent

MLB: The Yankees called Cliff Lee’s agent Sunday on the first day of the free-agent negotiating period to say they will be back in touch with an offer for the top pitcher on the market, a baseball official familiar with the conversation told the Associated Press.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce the contact with agent Darek Braunecker.

Texas hopes to re-sign the 2008 A.L. Cy Young Award winner. The Yankees have made signing Lee the top priority among free agents.

• AP source: Tigers, Peralta agree to 2-year deal: Jhonny Peralta is staying with the Detroit Tigers.

The shortstop has agreed to an $11.25 million, two-year contract, a person familiar with the contract said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced.

Acquired from Cleveland in July, Peralta was shifted from third base to shortstop by Detroit and hit .253 with eight home runs in 57 games with the Tigers.

Gasol’s triple-double leads Lakers to win

NBA: Pau Gasol had 20 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists while completing his fourth career triple-double by the third quarter, and Los Angeles easily improved to 7-0 for the fifth time in franchise history with a 121-96 victory over visiting Portland.

Lamar Odom had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Kobe Bryant scored 12 points and Ron Artest played stringent defense on Portland star Brandon Roy.

Andre Miller scored 20 points and Nicolas Batum added 17 for the Blazers. • Stuckey, Hamilton lead Pistons over Warriors: In Auburn Hills, Mich., Richard Hamilton scored 27 points and Rodney Stuckey added 21 points and nine assists to help Detroit beat Golden State 102-97.

Austin Daye added nine points for the Pistons.

Monta Ellis led Golden State with 24 points and Dorell Wright had 19.

• Nash, Suns hand Hawks first loss of season: Jason Richardson scored 21 points, Steve Nash added 19 and visiting Phoenix held off Atlanta’s second-half comeback to beat the Hawks 118-114.

The Hawks suffered their first loss after a 6-0 start.

There were four ties in the fourth quarter but the Hawks, who trailed by 18 in the third period, could not take the lead.

Nash, who had 15 assists, made four free throws in the final 7 seconds to protect the lead.

Joe Johnson had 34 points and Al Horford added 30 for Atlanta.

Green gives Capitals win over Flyers in OT

NHL: Mike Green scored a power-play goal 29 seconds into overtime to give Washington a 3-2 win against visiting Philadelphia.

It was Green’s fourth goal of the season. Nicklas Backstrom had two assists for the Capitals, who moved ahead of Philadelphia into the Eastern Conference lead.

• Oilers score twice in 14 seconds, beat Blackhawks: Kurtis Foster and Sam Gagner scored 14 seconds apart in the third period, and Edmonton beat Chicago 2-1.

Nikolai Khabibulin made 26 saves for Edmonton, which improved to 2-2-2 on road this season and 4-23-3 in its last 30 road games dating to December 2009.

Tennis: Roger Federer reclaimed his hometown title from Novak Djokovic, beating the defending champion 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the Swiss Indoors final in Basel, Switzerland.

The top-seeded Federer broke the Serb’s serve early in the first, and two straight times in the deciding third set to cruise to victory in under two hours.

• Ivanovic returns to top 20 by winning Bali title: Ana Ivanovic ended her season by returning to the top 20 with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Alisa Kleybanova of Russia in the Tournament of Champions final in Bali, Indonesia.

Ivanovic won the first set easily, but the second was much closer, with Kleybanova’s double-fault in the tiebreak providing the turning point.

• Pennetta routs Vandeweghe as Italy keeps Fed Cup: Flavia Pennetta routed 18-year-old CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in San Diego to give Italy its second straight Fed Cup final victory over the United States.

Pennetta’s victory in the fourth singles match gave the Italians a 3-1 victory in the best-of-5 finale. Her victory came after Melanie Oudin stunned French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-1 to keep the United States alive.

• Ferrer wins all-Spanish final at Valencia Open: David Ferrer beat Marcel Granollers 7-5, 6-3 to win the Valencia Open in Valencia, Spain, virtually assuring himself of a spot in the season-ending ATP Tour finals.

Ferrer had key breaks in each set and defended his own service game well to earn the title at the City of Arts and Sciences. Granollers netted Ferrer’s serve to finish the all-Spanish final on the indoor surface.

Miscellany: Jockey Calvin Borel was fined and fellow rider Javier Castellano was fined and suspended for six days after a fight in the winner’s circle Friday at Churchill Downs.

The Kentucky Board of Stewards fined Borel $5,000 and Castellano $2,500 for their fight following the conclusion of the Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

Borel approached Castellano shortly after the race, setting of a chaotic scene in which the two riders traded blows.

• Lorenzo caps record year with ninth win in Valencia: Moto GP champion Jorge Lorenzo won the Valencia Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, capping a record year with his ninth victory.

The Spaniard overtook pole sitter Casey Stoner of Ducati to win the 30-lap race in 46 minutes, 44.622 seconds and set a record for points with 383 – 10 better than teammate Valentino Rossi’s previous total.

• U.S. falls to Italy at volleyball worlds: The United States fell to Italy in four sets, ending its 17-game winning streak and dropping its first match at the women’s volleyball world championships in Nagoya, Japan. The European champions improved to 3-2 with the 25-16, 24-26, 27-25, 27-25 second-round win. The U.S. is 4-1 in Group F.

• NYC mayor’s daughter hurt in equestrian event: The 27-year-old daughter of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suffered a concussion and fractured spine after taking a tumble from her horse during an equestrian sporting tournament, her publicist said.

Georgina Bloomberg fell from her mount, Radio City, when her saddle came loose during a jump while competing in the Syracuse (N.Y.) Invitational Sporthorse Tournament.

• Racener likes WSOP chances despite chip obstacle: Florida poker professional John Racener says he still likes his chances at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas despite his 6-1 chip disadvantage to Canadian pro Jonathan Duhamel. The 24-year-old from Port Richey, Fla., says all he needs is to meet his first goal – doubling his chips.
