In brief: Conservation Futures topic of meeting

RIVERSIDE – Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the IMAX Theater in Riverfront Park.

Public input is needed for the 2010 Conservation Futures nomination round. Thirty-six individual properties have been submitted for consideration as future public open space areas that will provide opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking and bicycling.

SCRAPS celebrating shelter dog month

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will celebrate “Adopt-a-Shelter Dog” during October by raising awareness of adopting first.

SCRAPS has a variety of dogs available for adoption and offers an adoption program, staffed with trained counselors who are experienced in matching families and individuals with the right animal. SCRAPS vaccinates, microchips, spays or neuters, and licenses the dog before it goes home; and SCRAPS offers free dog training classes to help support owners in their adoption.

SCRAPS is located at 2521 N. Flora Road and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

RIVERSIDE – Hospice of Spokane, 121 S. Arthur St., will hold a class for caregivers on Monday, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The class will give participants information on how to take care of themselves to avoid burnout; how to prepare for legal and other planning issues, often connected with care giving and illness; how to talk with doctors and billing offices; how to communicate with friends and family members; and how spiritual issues play a role in being a caregiver.

Corn maze at Beck’s Harvest House

COLBERT – Each weekend through October, Beck’s Harvest House, 9919 E. Greenbluff Road, will entertain children, moms and dads with a giant corn maze. A smaller version is available for younger children.

The maze is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Haunted Pavilion starts Oct. 15

RIVERSIDE – Beginning Oct. 15, Riverfront Park and IGNITE! Community Theater team up for the third annual Haunted Pavilion and will give all who enter a good scare.

Children and parents can enjoy the Kids Zone straw-bale maze, food vendors, the SR-2 Scream Machine, Ghostly Golf and the Riverfront Fright haunted house.

A full night’s spook includes admission to the haunted house, one ride on the SR-2 Scream Machine, nine holes of Ghostly Golf and your choice of a regular IMAX movie or one session of ice skating at the Riverfront Park Ice Palace for $16 for adults and $14 for students.

Admission to the haunted house is $8 for adults and $6 for students.

Inaugural chamber music concert Oct. 17

WEST HILLS – The Inland Northwest Chamber Music Collective will have its inaugural concert Oct. 17 at the Convent of the Sisters of the Holy Names, 2911 W. Fort Wright Drive, at 3:30 p.m.

The performance will include Mozart, by the Oboe Quartet; Walter Rabl, played by the Quartet, Op. 1 for violin, clarinet, cello and piano; and music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor will be done in a Nonet in f minor.

The suggested donation at the door is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

The Inland Northwest Chamber Music Collective is sponsored by Holy Names Music Center.

Bowling teams sought for JA fundraiser

RIVERSIDE – Junior Achievement of the Inland Northwest is planning a Viva Las Vegas bowl-a-thon Nov. 5 at Lilac Lanes and Nov. 19 and 20 at Players and Spectators and is looking for teams and volunteers.

The fun-filled day of bowling, prizes and giveaways will help support local kids in the Junior Achievement programs, helping them learn to be financially literate, entrepreneurial and work force ready.
