Suspended Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien was suspended indefinitely Wednesday pending a hearing for grabbing a fan while heading to the locker room in the game against Minnesota. Rypien, cousin of former Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, was on the way to the visiting locker room in Minnesota on Tuesday night after being assessed a double minor for roughing and 10-minute misconduct in the second period. Rypien reached up and shoved a Wild fan who was applauding at the railing.

• Connecticut quarterback Cody Endres was suspended for the remainder of the season for an unspecified violation of university policies. The junior had already served a month-long suspension in September for a violation of school rules. After returning, he became the starting quarterback.

Sidelined North Carolina cornerback Charles Brown won’t play this season amid the ongoing NCAA investigation into the football program, while cornerback Kendric Burney will miss this weekend’s game at No. 25 Miami.

Fired North Texas fired football coach Todd Dodge, declaring its decision to put a high school coach in charge of a Division I program a failure after 3 1/2 dismal years. Dodge was let go after a 1-6 start that left him with a career record of 6-37.

Announced Los Angeles Galaxy midfielders Eddie Lewis and Chris Klein plan to retire at the end of the season. Their regular-season finale is Sunday against FC Dallas, then the Galaxy will try to win their first MLS Cup since 2005 in the postseason.

Pledged Boxer Shannon Briggs pledged to return to the ring after surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left arm, despite a lopsided loss to Vitali Klitschko over the weekend at Hamburg, Germany, that left him hospitalized. Briggs said that apart from the arm injury, he felt fine after absorbing heavy punishment on Saturday night. He’s been in the hospital since and is scheduled for surgery on Friday.
