In brief: Dozens of tenants displaced by fire

Nearly 60 residents of an apartment complex on East South Riverton Avenue were displaced by an early Saturday fire.

Fire crews responded at 2:30 a.m., according to a Spokane Fire Department news release. There is “extensive damage” to the third floor and 21 apartments.

The American Red Cross Inland Northwest Chapter reported that 10 residents checked into the shelter set up at Stevens Elementary School. The other residents are staying with family or friends.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the fire department.

Services, offices affected by holiday

The Labor Day holiday affects the following services in Spokane and Kootenai counties:

• Garbage pickup will be one day behind all week.

• City, county, state and federal offices will be closed Monday.

• Riverfront Park attractions will be open all weekend, along with Pig Out in the Park.

• Library branches are closed Monday; some remain closed on Tuesday as well.

• Most state-run liquor stores will be open Monday.

• There will be no mail service Monday.

• Parking meters are free Monday, and Spokane Transit Authority bus routes will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.
