In brief: Kiwanis fundraiser at Zephyr Lodge

LIBERTY LAKE – The Liberty Lake Kiwanis will have a wine tasting at the historic Zephyr Lodge, 1900 S. Zephyr Road, on Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Valley Fire Station 10 open house Saturday

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Fire Department will host a dedication ceremony for its new Station 10 at 9 a.m. Saturday. The station, which is still under construction, will be named the Greenacres Station after fire commissioners voted recently to begin giving each station names to reflect their neighborhoods. The department’s Honor Guard will participate in the ceremony. The station is located at 17217 E. Sprague Ave.

CV band, color guard will host car wash

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Central Valley High School Band and Color Guard will have its annual car wash and rummage sale on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the high school’s south parking lot, 821 S. Sullivan Road.

Cost is $5 per vehicle.

All proceeds will benefit the CVHS Band and Color Guard.

Salon fundraising for alopecia event

SPOKANE VALLEY – Monique’s Salon, 10 N. Evergreen Road, has joined Treasured Locks for Children to raise funds for Childhood Alopecia Awareness Month and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

On Saturday, Monique’s will donate all money from the day’s services to the organization. Monique’s also will accept donations this month to reach its $10,000 goal.

Treasured Locks for Children provides hair replacement for children who have lost hair because of alopecia, chemotherapy or other medical conditions.

Tourism-centered funding available

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is now accepting applications for tourism promotion funding. The money is available to agencies and groups that promote tourism with the goal of improving economic activity in the city. An official grant proposal request must be submitted to the city by 4 p.m. Sept. 17.

The proposals are available online at www.spokanevalley.org.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, which will provide recommendations to the City Council for a final decision. For more information, call Sarah Davenport at (509) 720-5041.

Plan amendments being accepted

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is accepting applications for amendments to the Comprehensive Plan. Changes to the plan may only be done once a year by state law.

All proposed amendments must be received by the city by Nov. 1. Those interested in making an amendment to the plan must schedule a pre-application meeting by calling Mike Basinger at (509) 720-5331.

The amendments will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and public hearings will be held. More information is available online at www.spokanevalley.org.

RIVERSIDE – Project Beauty Share will have a toilet paper drive on Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., to benefit Anna Ogden Hall, Our Place Community Ministries, Our Sister’s Closet, Hope House, Transitions and Catholic Charities of Spokane’s St. Margaret’s Shelter and Childbirth and Parenting Assistance program.

Donations for the drive can be made to the Project Beauty Share main collection center at The Make-Up Studio, 216 N. Bernard St. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, and hair accessories also will be accepted.

SPOKANE VALLEY – Theater Arts For Children will perform “Juvie” Sept. 16 through Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave.

The show is set in a juvenile detention center and depicts the lives of kids, some drug offenders, some killers and some who are misfits and are scared, lonely and locked up. The show is meant for a PG-13 audience.

Spokane County – Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Lilac Festival Court.

Senior girls enrolled in Spokane County high schools are invited to apply for the court through their high schools by 3:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Each high school will select one candidate for consideration on the court.

Potential candidates must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher by the end of their junior year, must be a full-time student in the county, single, never have been married, divorced or had a marriage annulled. They must be childless and never have been convicted of a crime. The candidates must have a good citizenship record and demonstrate community involvement and good school attendance. They must hold no other royalty titles by Nov. 5.

Home-schooled and Running Start students should contact their base high school for applications.
