Suspended The Big Sky Conference reprimanded and suspended Northern Colorado football player Brandon Owens for throwing a punch during his team’s game against Weber State. League commissioner Doug Fullerton says the junior cornerback will be suspended for the first half of a home game Saturday against Idaho State.

• Suspended redshirt freshman running back Jason Douglas is unlikely to play for Pittsburgh again according to Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt after being charged with striking a pedestrian with his car while driving drunk.

• An NCAA committee will hear an appeal on Friday by Georgia receiver A.J. Green to reduce his four-game suspension. Green has already missed the Bulldogs’ first two games for selling an Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000 to someone deemed an agent.

Declared Texas senior tailback Vondrell McGee was declared academically ineligible and will not play this season. Longhorns coach Mack Brown said that the former starting tailback lost his appeal to the NCAA but remains enrolled at Texas and is on schedule to graduate in December.

Hired North Carolina hired former Buffalo Bills assistant Charlie Coiner to replace John Blake, the Tar Heels’ associate head coach who resigned amid an ongoing NCAA investigation.

Signed The New Jersey Nets signed free-agent forward Stephen Graham to a two-year contract. Graham averaged 4.2 points and 1.9 rebounds in 70 games for Charlotte last season.

Injured Olympic downhill skiing champion Didier Defago is expected to miss the entire Alpine season after tearing the ACL in his left knee while training.

Died Former Toronto executive Al LaMacchia, who was with the Blue Jays during their World Series championships and was a longtime scout for several teams, died in San Antonio. He was 89.
