EVHS senior wins creativity contest
Julie Storrs, a senior at East Valley High School, recently won a $2,000 scholarship from the Creative Self-Expression Competition, sponsored by the Great Frame Up, a custom picture framing shop with stores in the Spokane area.
Storrs painting, “In the Light of Hope,” was inspired by a photograph one of her friends took of a little girl during a mission trip to Africa.
“I was instantly drawn in by the colors and emotions of the little girl,” Storrs said.
She submitted her entry into the competition at a local store, which was judged by local art professionals.
Storrs traveled to Santa Monica, Calif., for a luncheon and awards ceremony. Actress Jane Seymour presented Storrs with her prize.
Marching bands play today at U-Hi
University High School, 12420 E. 32nd Ave., will present the Spokane Preview Showcase 2010 Marching Band Festival today.
The event, which will feature performances by the Cheney, Mt. Spokane, Lewis and Clark and University high school marching bands, kicks off at 9 a.m. for critiqued performances and full shows in uniform during the afternoon.
The performances will be judged, but the event is not a competition. The bands will receive feedback from the judges to prepare them for competitions this fall.
The cost to attend is $5.
The UHS Music Boosters will also offer a build-your-own wrap, salad and a dessert buffet for $5.
The West Valley School District board of directors on Wednesday selected a date for its block party.
The annual event, which is presented by the board to thank the community for its support throughout the year, will be May 24 at West Valley High School.
Activities include games, a dunk tank, crafts, performances by the bands and choirs and a spaghetti dinner.
