NWC’s Hanson, Colton’s Kramer earn AP honors

SEATTLE – Northwest Christian’s Kwinn Hanson and Colton’s Mollie Kramer were named top players in their classifications on the Associated Press all-state basketball teams, released Thursday.

Hanson helped the Northwest Christian boys to the State 2B title in early March at the Arena. Hanson scored 21 points, including 17 in the first half, as his Crusaders earned their seventh state title with a 41-32 win over Napavine.

On the same night at the Arena, Kramer’s Wildcats won their third consecutive State 1B girls title.

Kentridge guard Gary Bell and Holy Names’ Erika Johnson were voted players of the year.

Bell edged out Garfield’s Tony Wroten Jr., and Gonzaga Prep’s Chris Sarbaugh for honors. Bell averaged 28.5 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers.

Johnson was a near-unanimous selection for the girls after helping Holy Names to the State 3A title. The California-bound senior averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and nearly five assists leading Holy Names to an undefeated season.

Bell was also the 4A player of the year and same for Johnson in 3A.

Bell was joined on the 4A first team by Sarbaugh, his future teammate at Gonzaga beginning next fall. Wroten, bound for Washington, is also on the first team, along with Oregon-bound Brett Kingma of Jackson and DaVonte Lacy of Curtis, who is headed for Washington State.

Lakes guard Issac Winston was voted the 3A player of the year; Clover Park’s Tana Pritchard the 2A player of the year; and Cascade Christian’s Cody Shackett the 1A player of the year.

Steven Broersma of state champion Sunnyside Christian received the honor in 1B.

Among girls, Federal Way forward Talia Walton was voted the 4A player of the year after leading the Eagles to the state championship game. She was joined on the first team by Devyn Galland of state champion Lewis and Clark, G-Prep’s Tia Presley, Sarah Hartwell of Bellarmine Prep and Kat Cooper from Auburn Riverside.

Johnson was joined on the 3A first team by teammate Claire Conricode and juniors Heather Corral (Prairie), Khadidja Toure (Kamiakin) and Airashay Rogers (Hazen).

Prosser star Tamara Jones was voted the player of the year in 2A for a second straight season and helped lead the Mustangs to the state title. Mackenzie Taylor from Freeman was voted 1A player of the year after leading her team to a second straight state crown.

Darrington’s Hailey Wales was honored in 2B.

Among those repeating on the all-state first teams from a year ago were: Kingma, Shackett, Concrete’s Tyler Clark, Ben Servatius of Asotin and Broersma.

Repeat honorees for girls included: Cooper; Port Angeles’ Jessica Madison; West Valley’s Shaniqua Nilles, La Salle’s Savannah Bonny and Lynden Christian’s Jasmine Hommes.

The voting was conducted by sports writers and from around the state.
