Jones caps late rally by Cougars

Derek Jones hit a winning three-run homer to cap an eight-run eighth inning as Washington State vaulted to a come-from-behind 10-8 Pac-10 baseball win over 11th-ranked Stanford at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman on Friday.

After the Cardinal (11-7) roughed up WSU starter Adam Conley for 11 hits into the sixth in their Pac-10 opener, Kellen Camus (1-0) closed the door on a three-run sixth and allowed just two hits through the eighth, and Paris Shewey pitched a hitless ninth to give the Cougars (11-10, 1-3) a chance.

• Ryan Carpenter (3-1) pitched seven shutout innings and Billy Moon had three hits and drove in a run as Gonzaga (14-8-1) blanked New Mexico (9-18) 3-0 at the Patterson Complex at GU.

It was GU’s fourth shutout and extended its string of shutout innings at home to 35.

• Gerrit Cole (3-2) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 10, as 24th-ranked UCLA (12-9, 3-1 Pac-10) bested visiting Washington (7-16) 2-1 in the Huskies’ Pac-10 opener.

Softball

Shelby Gonzales (Moses Lake) had a 5-for-8 day and drove in five runs as North Idaho split a SWAC doubleheader at Southern Nevada (25-19, 18-12), winning 11-5 after losing the opener 9-7.

Ashley Moon (University) hit her first collegiate home run and drove in three runs for NIC (21-19, 12-15 SWAC) on her birthday in the first game.

Blake Meredith (Post Falls) scattered nine hits in the second game.

• Breanna Lookabill (Mead) had four hits, including two home runs and a double, and drove in five runs as Community Colleges of Spokane split a NWAACC doubleheader at Columbia Basin, winning 11-1 in five innings after losing 3-2.

Dani Johnson pitched a three-hitter in the loss and a two-hitter in the win for CCS (7-8, 4-2), striking out 12 in 12 innings. Stephanie Chrystal hit home runs in both games for CCS.

Track and field

Washington State junior Sean Harris compiled a PR of 6,641 points to finish ninth among 16 competitors in the decathlon at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz.

WSU senior Angela Jensen was eighth among 13 in the heptathlon with 4,742 points.

• Whitworth’s Tonya Turner won the women’s 3,000 steeplechase in a school-record 10:48.99 at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.

Rodeo

Tyson Durfey of Colbert tied for third in tie-down roping with a time of 9.1 seconds to earn $2,057 in the opening round of the Dodge National Circuit Finals in Oklahoma City.
