Hired Former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried is the new men’s basketball coach at North Carolina State. In a statement from the school, Gottfried said he was “extremely excited about the opportunity and challenge” of taking over a program that hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2006. He replaces Sidney Lowe, who resigned last month after five seasons. The 47-year-old coach will receive a five-year deal with a guarantee of $1.2 million annually.
• Lamar has hired former Texas Tech coach Pat Knight. The 40-year-old son of Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight replaces Steve Roccaforte, who was fired after going 76-78 in five seasons. The Cardinals finished 13-17 and 7-9 in the Southland Conference.
Injured Shoulder and wrist injuries will keep Kim Clijsters sidelined for a month, forcing her to miss Belgium’s Fed Cup semifinal next week against the Czech Republic. She is aiming to play the French Open. The U.S. Open and Australian Open champion said a busy spring schedule overexerted her right shoulder and wrist. Clijsters is ranked No. 2.
• Rangers second- leading scorer Ryan Callahan is out indefinitely because of a broken right leg, just as New York is making a final push for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. Callahan, who has a career-high 23 goals and 25 assists this season, was injured with 1:45 left in Monday night’s 5-3 win over the Bruins.
Retired It’s the end of an era for women’s basketball at New Mexico. Head coach Don Flanagan, the most successful coach in the program’s history, has officially called it quits. Flanagan says he’s comfortable with his decision and sees his 40-year coaching career as positive.
Declared Georgia junior forward Trey Thompkins has entered the NBA draft, while teammate Travis Leslie will test his pro prospects but could return for his senior year with the Bulldogs. Coach Mark Fox announced the 6-foot-10 Thompkins was hiring an agent, ending his college eligibility. Leslie is also entering his name to the list of underclass draft prospects, but the 6-4 guard won’t hire an agent.
