Breakfast of Champions will award honors

From Staff Reports

The Chase Youth Foundation will present its annual Breakfast of Champions April 22 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in the Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lincoln St.

Groups and individuals who have provided opportunities for area youths to grow and become community leaders will receive the Champion of Youth Awards.

Categories include business, civic, education, government, media and nonprofits.

The winners this year include:

• The Leadership Spokane Scan Team (education): Wade Bowles, Kenny Dillon, Kate Green, Dan Hiebert, Jason Jones and Bernadette Pillar, who worked with youths at the North East Youth Center to build a library, collect books and raise funds for laptops.

• Louis Lauterjung (civic): Lauterjung travels door to door in the fall and at Christmastime offering financial support to families for school supplies and Christmas gifts. He is also involved in the Gonzaga Prep food drive every year around Thanksgiving.

• Nate Mannetter (business): Mannetter, a program coordinator and educator at Tincan, teaches a class to troubled young men preparing to enter high school during the summer. The students must come up with a product or business, make a business plan and develop a marketing plan using computer software.

• KXLY Broadcasting (media): Since 1986 when the Chase Youth Commission was founded, KXLY has been a champion for the organization. KXLY has been involved with many youth initiatives including “For Kids’ Sake,” “Miss School, Miss Out,” “Family First,” and “Coats for Kids.” It also provides a master of ceremonies to host the Chase Youth Awards, produces public service announcements to recruit nominations and offers coverage for the awards.

• Mark Richard, Spokane County commissioner (government): Richard has worked with the Chase Youth Commission since he was elected to office. He encourages better communication between students and the Spokane County government and students are now able to serve alongside adults on a variety of county boards.

• Ham on Regal Players – Ferris High School (nonprofit): Joe Murcar, Sandy Hansen and Mike and Cindy Bull worked to present this annual musical and comedy show, written, produced and performed by Ferris High School parents and staff. The show raises funds each year for the Ferris Parent Teacher Group to allocate funds to various activities, academics, athletics, supply needs to classrooms, teachers and students, and the school’s annual senior all-nighter.
