Bulldogs women second

With five players in the top 16, led by Tai Jade Kliebphipat’s 7-over 144 that shares fifth place after Monday’s first two rounds, Gonzaga is second going into today’s final day of the West Coast Conference Women’s Golf Championships in Hollister, Calif.

No. 20 Pepperdine leads at 3-over 587. GU is at 613.

• Washington State improved in the second round by eight strokes over Sunday’s opening round, shooting a 315, but the Cougars’ 638 total has them last in the Pac-10 women’s championships in Tempe, Ariz. USC leads with a 573.

WSU’s leading scorer is sophomore Emma Betland, tied for 32nd at 9-over 153 after a three-stroke improvement to 3-over 75.

• A 34-over 322 left Eastern Washington eighth after the first round of the Big Sky women’s championships in Chandler, Ariz., but the Eagles are just three strokes out of sixth. Portland State has a one-stroke lead at 303.

EWU senior Kellie Holmstedt shot 4-over 76 to tie for ninth.

Men’s golf

Travis Johnsen and his Gonzaga teammates both stand fifth after the first two rounds of the WCC tournament in Hollister, Calif., that ends today.

Johnsen shot 73-69 for 2-under 142. The Bulldogs are at 9-over 597. San Francisco leads at 565.

Baseball

It was one step forward and five back for Gonzaga in the polls.

The Bulldogs (21-11) moved into the Baseball America Top 25 for the first time since 2009, at 24th.

They remain in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30, but slid to No. 29 from 24th.

• Cody Martin of Gonzaga, who in 3 2/3 innings of hitless ball retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced – six by strikeouts – is the West Coast Conference pitcher of the week.
