April 21 – This is Disaster Preparedness Month. In keeping with Gov. Chris Gregoire’s request for a statewide earthquake drill at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, promptly on time I crawled beneath my desk, covering my head with one hand, and held onto the desk leg with the other.
To be honest, for the requisite two minutes I felt more like a complete fool than I did a responsible, prepared citizen.
I had visions of Gov. Gregoire crawling beneath her desk for two minutes, ignoring the telephones ringing and people queued up outside her office waiting for various meetings. Even worse, can you imagine Chief Kirkpatrick or Mayor Verner crawling beneath their desks to duck and cover?

April 20 – If you’re lucky enough to still have kids around the house, don’t let another season go by without building some sort of outdoor family tradition: Something they can count on year after year, whether it’s in person or in their memories. Something based around fishing – streams, lakes, docks, boats, trips to the mountanis or out of state – is ideal.
Fishing guide Anton Jones of Darrell & Dad’s Family Guide Service has this observation:
“As we get older, those happy memories are an important part of our satisfaction. I had a father-son team out on the boat for the kid’s birthday. This was his third year in a row! It reminded me of the great times that I had as a kid with my Dad, on opening day of trout season.”

April 18 – About a year ago the S-R published news that Wal-Mart Inc. would put another new store in Spokane Valley, about six blocks east of the Costco. There hasn’t been a lot of progress so far on that project. Why not? We tracked down Wal-Mart’s regional contacts to find out when the project will get going.
Construction will start in late summer or early fall. It will take 12 to 14 months after groundbreaking before the new Walmart opens. A Spokane Valley hiring center will be set up roughly 90 days before the doors open. That hiring office will have an online component for job applicants.
The store will include a garden center with outside sales area covering about 4,700 square feet. When finished, it will be about 155,000 square feet.
