Charged A cab driver has been charged with manslaughter in the death of an Alabama football player who died after taking drugs. Fernandina Beach (Fla.) Police said Rodney Young Odum was arrested late Monday and charged with manslaughter and the sale/delivery of a controlled substance. Offensive lineman Aaron Douglas died May 12 as a result of multiple drugs found in his system. Police say Douglas rode to a party in a cab driven by Odum, who either sold or gave him two prescription Methadone pills.
Arrested Mississippi quarterback Randall Mackey was arrested for disorderly conduct after a fight at a downtown Oxford bar early Tuesday morning. Police say Mackey hit an officer on the lip, though they did not feel Mackey purposely hit the officer, because if they had, more serious charges would have been filed.
Injured The Philadelphia Phillies placed All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels on the disabled list and recalled infielder Pete Orr from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The move is retroactive to Aug. 13 and will allow Hamels to come off the DL so he can make his next scheduled start Monday. Hamels has inflammation in his left shoulder.
Honored Washington State’s Eileen Maes was named Pac-12 soccer player of the week. She scored three goals in less than 22 minutes in the Cougars’ 3-1 season-opening victory at Hawaii last Friday.
Reinstated Texas Longhorns senior safety Christian Scott was reinstated to the team after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge. Coach Mack Brown said Scott will still have to sit out the first three games. Scott must serve 40 hours of community service.
Signed Detroit Pistons rookie Kyle Singler signed with Spanish club Lucentum Alicante for the upcoming season if a lockout wipes out the NBA season.
Resigned The University of Richmond says head football coach Latrell Scott resigned. The school did not say why he resigned. Offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg has been named interim head coach.
Announced Former Connecticut women’s basketball star Maya Moore made the first cut for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award. Moore is one of 30 semifinalists.
