In brief: Enlighten us on festive homes

From Staff Reports

Residents of the Inland Northwest have been busily decking their halls, and we want to know all about it.

If you or your neighbors have a noteworthy holiday display this year, feel free to share the details with Spokesman-Review readers. Go to www.spokesman.com/ holidaylights/ and click on the “Tell us about it” link. There, you’ll be asked to provide as specific an address as possible of the festive home, as well as a brief description of the display. We’ll need your contact information, too, but don’t worry – we’ll keep that information to ourselves.

We’ll publish a roundup of the decorated homes on Dec. 16 in the Today section, and post them at spokesman.com/ holidaylights, where you can see all of the addresses, sort them by neighborhood or even create maps for your own personal tour.

Agency seeks leads on elk

Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials are seeking leads in the case of a bull elk poached several miles east of Silverwood Theme Park.

The elk was killed sometime between 9:30 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday in a private field near the intersection of Bunco and Nunn roads.  The culprits removed the head and much of the meat from the carcass, officials said.

Elk herds are more visible this time of year, moving into open fields now that the general rifle season has closed, said Mark Rhodes, Fish and Games’s district conservation officer.

Anyone with information can contact the Citizens Against Poaching Hotline at (800) 632-5999 or Fish and Game at (208) 769-1414.  Callers may be eligible for a monetary reward, and may remain anonymous.

Inland Helicopters aids in training

Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake is teaming up with a Spokane business to offer a new helicopter pilot training program.

Flight instruction and two helicopters will be provided by Inland Helicopters of Spokane. The college will give some of the classroom instruction.

The program, which begins in January, will operate at Grant County International Airport. The Robinson R22 two-seat helicopter will be the main training vehicle.

Students who complete the program will earn an associate degree in applied science along with Federal Aviation Administration certification.

An improving job market for helicopter pilots is expected in coming years.

The college has offered a commercial pilot program since 1965. It has 27 aircraft.

Man robs worker of OxyContin

A gunman robbed a Deer Park pharmacy of OxyContin about 4:40 p.m. Monday.

The man handed an employee at the Medicine Shoppe, 11 E. H St., a note demanding the powerful prescription pain killer while displaying a silver pistol tucked in his waistband, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The robber left the pharmacy with a quantity of the drug and ran across the street to the back of the Salty Dog restaurant. No vehicle was seen, and no injuries were reported.

The culprit is described as 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7, tall and clean shaven. He wore a dark blue or black wool-type coat (possibly a Navy pea jacket) and a dark knit cap.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
