Churches ready Christmas events

This is the week when children across Spokane Valley will don costumes and prepare to perform in Christmas pageants at local churches. Some churches will also have special Christmas choir performances.

• Foothills Community Church will present its Sunday school Christmas program at 6 p.m. Sunday. The musical about the gift of hope is titled “The Present is the Future.” The church is at 11102 N. Forker Road.

• A children’s Christmas program will be performed during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday at Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road. A potluck lunch will follow the service, and there may be a visit from Santa. Those attending the potluck are asked to bring a main dish plus a side dish or dessert to share.

• Opportunity Presbyterian Church’s Chancel Choir will perform a Christmas cantata during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday. The performance includes soloists, a string trio and an organist. The church is at 202 N. Pines Road.

• The Christian men’s singing ensemble “His Song” will perform a Christmas concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene, 15515 E. 20th Ave. A reception will follow the performance, and CDs will be available for purchase.

• The Christmas children’s play at Zion Lutheran Church is called “A Mouse’s Tale.” The play about the birth of Jesus will be performed during the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday. A cake reception will follow the service at the church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave.

Craft fair

Advent Lutheran Church will host an Advent craft fair today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s outreach and youth programs. The church is at Broadway Avenue and McDonald Road.

Candle-lighting

The Spokane Chapter of the Compassionate Friends will host a candle-lighting ceremony in honor of all children who have died from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road.

Those attending are invited to bring a photo or small memento to display. A dessert potluck will be held after the ceremony. Call (509) 850-0823 to RSVP or for more information.
