Valleyfest worthwhile
Thank you to Nina Culver for reporting on the lack of funding for Valleyfest (Valley Voice, Dec. 1).
This is a great community event that showcases the city of Spokane Valley and surrounding area. It does bring in a lot of out of visitors not only from the Inland Northwest but from Montana, Oregon, Idaho, California and Canada. This event brings great exposure and markets what the city of Spokane has to offer.
I know the Spokane Valley City Council declined them funding on Tuesday but remember that you work for the people and not for yourselves and the community wants this event to keep going.
The City Council did have no problem providing $42,600 in funding for the HUB (not in Spokane Valley), and providing the Spokane Regional Sports Commission funding in the amount of $185,000 (also not in Spokane Valley) and championed a second round of funding so they can accommodate the Convention and Visitors Bureau (not located in Spokane Valley). How sad is this, that a true nonprofit that helps in giving back to the community was denied funding.
Every member of the City Council and the mayor have all benefited from this event in their personal and professional life. I urge them to do the right thing and help not only themselves but the community they represent and fund this great nonprofit – Valleyfest.
