Signed The Boston Celtics have signed first-round draft pick JaJuan Johnson and second-round pick E’Twaun Moore and re-signed Sasha Pavlovic. The 6-foot-10 Johnson was the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten last season. The 6-foot-4 Moore, also from Purdue, averaged 18.0 points and 5.1 rebounds last season.
Hired The University of Toledo Rockets will hire offensive coordinator Matt Campbell to take over as its new football coach. It’s the first head coaching job for Campbell, 32, who was named the school’s interim coach on Friday after Tim Beckman announced he was leaving for Illinois.
Fired Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville has fired two assistants and moved a third to another position following the program’s first losing season in 19 years. Offensive line coach Matt Moore and defensive backs coach Otis Mounds were fired. Defensive line coach Sam McElroy will be reassigned.
Died Former Harvard coach Joe Restic, who won or tied for five Ivy League football championships during 23 years as coach, has died. He was 85. Restic coached the Crimson from 1971-93 and compiled a 117-97-6 record. The university said he died Thursday at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.
• Former NFL defensive back and reliable return man Leonard Lyles, who helped break football’s color barrier as one of the early black players, has died. He was 74. The San Francisco 49ers said that Lyles died Nov. 20 at Louisville (Ky.) Jewish Hospital. No other details were provided. Lyles was selected by Baltimore in the first round of the 1958 draft out of Louisville and spent 10 of his 12 seasons with the Colts, interrupted by a two-year stint with the 49ers in 1959 and ‘60.
Transferred The Seattle Sounders FC has transferred midfielder Erik Friberg back to his native Sweden and top flight club Malmo FF. General manager Adrian Hanauer says Friberg is starting a family and wanted to be closer to home. Friberg spent one season in Seattle and totaled one goal and two assists.
Leaving Miami Hurricanes running back Lamar Miller is skipping his final two seasons of college eligibility and entering the NFL draft. Miller ran for 1,272 yards as a redshirt sophomore this season.
