Senators win on Cowen’s overtime goal

NHL: Former Spokane Chief Jared Cowen scored 45 seconds into overtime, giving the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night in Buffalo, N.Y.

Cowen pinched into the slot and redirected a pass from Erik Karlsson in the right corner.

Milan Michalek and Peter Regin also scored for Ottawa, which came back after trailing 2-1 in the first period. Michalek, who leads the NHL with 19 goals, left the game with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the second period after colliding with Karlsson.

• Stars cool off Rangers: Trevor Daley broke up a scoreless game with 4:59 remaining, Richard Bachman made 34 saves to win his second straight start and the Dallas Stars beat the New York Rangers 1-0 in New York.

The Rangers lost for only the third time in 10 games (7-2-1).

• Flyers win sixth straight: Scott Hartnell extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, Marc-Andre Bourdon got his first NHL goal and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 5-1 in Washington for their sixth straight victory.

The Flyers played without leading scorer Claude Giroux, who is out indefinitely with a concussion.

Giroux’s symptoms have worsened since he suffered a head injury against Tampa Bay last week.

• Bruins blank Kings: Brad Marchand scored twice and backup goalie Tuukka Rask earned his first shutout of the season, leading the Boston Bruins to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Boston.

It was the Kings’ first game under interim coach John Stevens.

Phillies, Willis agree to one-year deal

Baseball: The Philadelphia Phillies and left-hander Dontrelle Willis reportedly agreed to a one-year contract, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity. Willis will make about $1 million. The deal is pending a physical. He was 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA for Cincinnati last year.

• Athletics retain Braden: The Oakland Athletics agreed to a one-year contract with left-hander Dallas Braden.

Braden, 28, made three starts last season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

• Red Sox sign Shoppach: Catcher Kelly Shoppach, 31, and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a $1.35 million, one-year contract.

The move likely ends Jason Varitek’s 15-year tenure behind the plate in Boston.

• More free agents hit market: Former All-Star pitchers Joe Saunders (Diamondbacks) and Hong-Chih Kuo (Dodgers), and Orioles outfielder Luke Scott are free agents after their teams declined to offer contracts.

Braves reliever Peter Moylan and Cardinals infielder Ryan Theriot also were among the 30 players set free.

• Mariners sign 11 players: The Seattle Mariners signed 11 players to minor league contracts with invites to spring training, including IF Luis Rodriguez and former Giants OF Darren Ford.

Jazz meet with free agent Josh Howard

Basketball: Utah Jazz officials met with free agent Josh Howard in North Carolina as they look to upgrade at small forward.

San Antonio, Washington, Denver, New Jersey and New Orleans also have expressed interest in Howard.

• Bucks re-sign Mbah a Moute: The Milwaukee Bucks re-signed free agent Luc Richard Mbah a Moute to a multiyear contract.

• Bobcats go small: Coach Paul Silas says 6-foot-8 Boris Diaw will replace Kwame Brown as the Bobcats’ starting center this season if they don’t sign another big man.

The Bobcats lost Brown to Golden State in free agency.

• Nene stays in Denver: The Denver Nuggets re-signed Nene to a five-year deal, keeping the unrestricted free agent through 2015-16.

• Sullinger’s status up in air: Ohio State coach Thad Matta still isn’t sure when star forward Jared Sullinger will play his next game.

Matta said that Sullinger is able to run, jump and shoot but still hasn’t recovered enough from back spasms that have kept him out of two games.

• Wisconsin avoids upset: Jared Berggren scored 17 points to help No. 14 Wisconsin (9-2) fend off a second-half surge from in-state rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee (8-3) for a 60-54 victory in Milwaukee.

The Badgers led 44-27 with 15:17 left to play, but the Panthers used a 16-1 run to pull within 45-43.

It was as close as the Panthers would get.

• Tennessee women top Ruthers: Shekinna Stricklen scored 22 points and sixth-ranked Tennessee (6-2) used a late run to post a 67-61 victory over No. 11 Rutgers (9-2) in Piscataway, N.J.

The game featured two Hall of Fame coaches with Tennessee’s Pat Summitt and C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers. The long-time friends and have combined for nearly 1,950 wins.

Rapid Redux ties win streak record at 19

Miscellany: At Laurel, Md., Rapid Redux tied a North American thoroughbred record for most victories in a calendar year, winning his 19th straight race to match the mark set by Citation in 1948.

• Boeheim, Syracuse sued: Former Syracuse ball boys and stepbrothers Bobby Davis and Mike Lang sued Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim and the school for defamation, saying they were vilified as liars out for money after they accused his longtime assistant Bernie Fine of molesting them.
