Mississippi downs No. 10 Kentucky
NCAA Men: Chris Warren rattled in a 25-footer over two defenders with 2.9 seconds remaining and Mississippi (14-8, 2-5 SEC) beat No. 10 Kentucky 71-69 on Tuesday night in Oxford, Miss.
Warren, who scored 22 points, hit the high-arcing shot to give the Rebels their first victory over a top-10 team during the five-year tenure of coach Andy Kennedy.
Warren finished 9 of 15 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
Terrance Jones scored 22 points and Doron Lamb added 20 for the Wildcats (16-5, 4-3, who rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to take the late lead. Lamb missed a running 3-pointer at the buzzer.
• No. 19 Wisconsin defeats No. 11 Purdue: Senior Jon Leuer scored 24 points and sophomore reserve Ryan Evans made two big plays in the final minute to lead the Badgers (16-5, 6-3 Big Ten) to a 66-59 win over the Boilermakers (18-5, 7-3) at Madison, Wis.
Evans hit a jumper from the free-throw line with 50 seconds left to put Wisconsin ahead for good at 60-59. He tied up Purdue’s E’Twaun Moore for a jump ball that went to the Badgers with 25 seconds left.
• Florida holds off No. 24 Vanderbilt in OT: Kenny Boynton scored 15 points, the last of them coming on a huge 3-pointer in overtime, and the Gators (17-5, 6-2 SEC) beat the Commodores (15-6, 3-4) 65-61 in overtime in Gainesville, Fla.
Blazers best Spurs as Aldridge scores 40
NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge had a career-high 40 points along with 11 rebounds and the Trail Blazers defeated the NBA-leading San Antonio Spurs 99-86 in Portland.
Wesley Matthews added 21 points for the Blazers.
Manu Ginobili had 14 points for the Spurs, who have lost only eight games this season.
• Bryant leads Lakers past Rockets: Kobe Bryant scored 32 points, Pau Gasol had 26, including the go-ahead layup with 1:04 left in overtime, and the Lakers bounced back from consecutive home losses with a 114-106 win over the Houston Rockets at Los Angeles.
• Okafor out for Hornets: The Hornets say center Emeka Okafor will be sidelined from one to three weeks because of his strained left oblique muscle. Okafor is the Hornets’ leading rebounder with 10.1 per game and has averaged 11.1 points and 1.8 blocks this season.
• Rookie Challenge teams announced: Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin lead a group of 18 players selected for the Rookie Challenge. The game pits rookies against second-year players on Feb. 18 in Los Angeles at the NBA All-Star game.
Rays sign Ramirez, Damon to deals
MLB: The Tampa Bay Rays are counting on Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon to help them remain competitive in baseball’s toughest division.
The free-agent outfielders officially became the newest additions to the defending A.L. East champions, signing one-year contracts to fill a couple of holes on a roster depleted by the departure of several key players, including All-Star Carl Crawford and slugger Carlos Pena.
• Ramirez signs contract with White Sox: Shortstop Alexei Ramirez and the Chicago White Sox have agreed in principle to a new contract that guarantees $32.5 million in new money over four years through 2015, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The 29-year-old Ramirez hit .282 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs last season and is considered one of the A.L.’s best-fielding shortstops.
Lightning shut out East-leading Flyers
NHL: Dwayne Roloson made 38 saves for his fourth shutout this season, Teddy Purcell scored two early first-period goals, and the Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 in Tampa, Fla., in a matchup of the Eastern Conference’s top two teams.
Tampa Bay, which has won all three games against the Flyers this season, trails the conference leaders by two points.
• Penguins upend Rangers: Dustin Jeffrey scored one of Pittsburgh’s three second-period goals and had the only one in a seven-round shootout to lift the injury- depleted Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Rangers in New York.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves through overtime and then stopped all seven attempts against him in the shootout.
