Tennessee coach Pearl ejected from loss

College Basketball: Tennessee men’s coach Bruce Pearl was ejected from the Volunteers’ 91-78 loss to College of Charleston on Friday in the final game before he begins serving an eight-game suspension during Southeastern Conference play.

Pearl was given a technical foul with 5:25 to go and Tennessee trailing 76-63 when Josh Bone was called for fouling Donavan Monroe. Pearl didn’t stop yelling from the sideline while Andrew Goudelock hit two free throws, and was called for a second technical, which meant he was ejected.

“I was just trying to get Tony Jones some reps, that’s all,” Pearl said, referencing the associate head coach who will take over for him during his suspension. SEC commissioner Mike Slive suspended Pearl for lying to NCAA investigators during an ongoing probe into recruiting practices by the Tennessee coaching staff.

• Michigan State beats Minnesota: In East Lansing, Mich., Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half and No. 20 Michigan State opened Big Ten play with a 71-62 victory over No. 14 Minnesota.

Summers’ 3-pointer midway though the second half started an 8-0 run that gave the Spartans (9-4, 1-0) the lead for good. It was the last of five straight 3s by Michigan State.

Trevor Mbakwe had 17 points and nine rebounds and Blake Hoffarber added 12 points for the Golden Gophers (11-3, 0-2), who lost their second straight.

• Kentucky, Harrellson dispatch Louisville: Brandon Knight scored 25 points and Josh Harrellson added a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds as visiting No. 11 Kentucky defeated No. 22 Louisville 78-63.

Preston Knowles led the Cardinals with 22 points and Chris Smith had 15 points and six rebounds.

Paul, Hornets upset Celtics

NBA: Trevor Ariza made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:34 to play and David West scored four of his 19 points in the final minute, helping the visiting New Orleans Hornets pull out an 83-81 win over the hurting Boston Celtics.

Chris Paul had 20 points and 11 assists for New Orleans. Emeka Okafor scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Ray Allen led Boston with 18 points. Paul Pierce had 12 and seven boards.

• Boozer leads Bulls past Nets: Carlos Boozer scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and the host Chicago Bulls won for the 12th time in 14 games, pulling away late to beat the New Jersey Nets 90-81.

Brook Lopez led New Jersey with 19 points. Travis Outlaw scored 16.

Overtime goal gives Isles win

NHL: P.A. Parenteau scored on a power play at 3:57 of overtime to give the visiting New York Islanders a 4-3 victory over the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings.

John Tavares had a goal and two assists, Matt Moulson and Jesse Joensuu also scored and Dwayne Roloson made 38 saves for New York.

• Devils top Atlanta for Lemaire’s first win in return: In Newark, N.J., Backup goalie Johan Hedberg made 28 saves and the New Jersey Devils beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 to snap a six-game losing streak and give Jacques Lemaire his first victory since replacing John MacLean behind the bench.

Dustin Byfuglien had his 15th goal for Atlanta. He leads NHL defenseman with 40 points.

• Capitals, Pens alumni skate to tie: Mario Lemieux couldn’t find the net. That doesn’t mean he’s lost his scoring touch.

Lemieux set up two goals to offset two goals by Washington’s Paul Mulvey as retired players from the Capitals and Penguins skated to a 5-all tie in the Winter Classic alumni game in Pittsburgh.

BSU coach Peterson wins award

Miscellany: Boise State’s Chris Petersen has won the Bobby Dodd football coach of the year award.

The award is selected from a vote of all previous winners and a panel chosen by the Bobby Dodd Foundation. Petersen was a unanimous selection.

• Nadal to face Federer in final: Top-Ranked Rafael Nadal defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4 and will face Roger Federer in the final of the World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Federer rallied to defeat Robin Soderling 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

The second-ranked Federer took control in the second set, hitting several of his 16 aces.

• Speedskater Davis wins all-around championship: Shani Davis posted the season’s fastest time in the 1,500 meters, winning his third race in two days at the U.S. speedskating championships at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.

Davis posted a time of 1:42.95 to beat Trevor Marsicano’s 1:44.80.

• U.S. win assures team first in group play at Junior Hockey worlds: Chris Krieder and Mitch Callahan scored, leading the United States to a 2-1 win over Switzerland at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.

The win assured the U.S. team (4-0) first place in Group A and a bye into the semifinal round.

Callahan scored at 13:53 of the second. Hustling over the blue line, he caused a turnover on a Switzerland breakout, then gathered the loose puck behind the net and stuffed it past the goalie for a 2-1 lead.

Switzerland will face Canada in the quarterfinals. Sweden beat Canada 6-5 in a shootout Friday.
