Awarded Spokane runner Bill Misner has been named a recipient of the USA Track & Field Masters’ Phidippides Award for outstanding performance and endurance in long-distance running for 2010. The award is given annually to USATF members 40 and older based on points earned by participation in races held on certified courses. Athletes who earn enough points are recognized by USATF with a gold, silver or bronze plaque. Misner was awarded a silver Phidippides plaque for his participation in seven USATF events staged on certified courses in 2010.
Agreed Catcher Geovany Soto agreed to a $3 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, avoiding arbitration. Soto, the 2008 N.L. Rookie of the Year, batted .280 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 105 games last season when his salary was $575,000. He had his season cut short when he underwent surgery on his right shoulder in September. The 28-year-old Soto spent most of his first seven seasons in the minors before becoming a regular in 2008 and started the All-Star game.
• The St. Louis Cardinals and reliever Kyle McClellan agreed on a one-year contract worth $1,375,000, avoiding arbitration. The 26-year-old right-hander appeared in 68 games in a setup role last season, going 1-4 with a career-best 2.27 ERA and two saves. He made $425,000.
• Free-agent pitcher Bruce Chen is set to re-sign with the Kansas City Royals, agreeing to a $2 million, one-year contract. The team said Chen’s deal is pending a physical. The 33-year-old lefty led the Royals in wins last season, going 12-7 with a 4.17 ERA in 33 games, including 23 starts. Chen can earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses.
• Free-agent reliever Kyle Farnsworth agreed to a $3.25 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. The deal includes a club option for 2012. Farnsworth joins a bullpen that is being rebuilt after helping Tampa Bay win the A.L. East for the second time in three seasons. The 34-year-old right-hander went 3-2 with a 3.34 ERA in 60 games for Kansas City and Atlanta Braves last year.
Died The father of Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk has died. Cecil Fisk died Thursday at Springfield (Vt.) Hospital after a brief illness. He was 97.
