Cardinals finish tourney unbeaten

Jamelle Jones (197 pounds) finished as one of six North Idaho wrestlers to win matches in both duals Saturday, helping the Cardinals to a 27-12 victory over Northwest College and a 30-7 win against Iowa Lakes CC at the Apodaca Duals in Powell, Wyo.

Jones earned a fall of NWC’s Ben Price at 6:22 in overtime before beating Jim Doyly of ILCC 15-7 for a major decision.

Branden Mowry (141 pounds) earned 10 points for the Cardinals with a fall a major decision.

NIC finished the dual tournament 3-0.

Prep wrestling

Garrett Demers earned a 7-2 decision against Post Falls’ Cole Jesienouski at 171 pounds, and Coeur d’Alene had 11 wrestlers reach the finals as the Vikings took the team title with 209.5 points at the Coeur d’Alene Invite.

The Trojans finished second with 120.5 points and had four champions, winning two out of three title matches against CdA.

Taking third was American Falls (103 points), while Bonners Ferry (80.5) and Lakeland (74) rounded out the top five.

Austin Wilson (145 pounds) of PF earned most outstanding wrestler for the larger weights, while Kellogg’s Chris Vergobbi (135) earned that honor in the smaller weights.

• Cody Chase earned a pinfall in 3:00 at 215 pounds and Clarkston (3-3) added seven wins by forfeit to knock off Pullman (0-6) 63-18 in their Great Northern League dual in Clarkston. Of the six matches wrestled, the Bantams won four, with Chase taking the first win.

College track & field

Washington State’s Jeshua Anderson won both the men’s 60-meter hurdles (8.02 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (47.12) and was the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay at the University of Washington Invitational indoor meet in Seattle.

Holly Parent led the Cougars in women’s field events, taking second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Three Eastern Washington athletes reached Big Sky Conference qualifying marks, led by junior Brad Wall, who finished the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.19 seconds.

Idaho senior Eugenio Mannucci extended his shot put winning streak to three with a season-best toss of 56-3 3/4.

Emmanuel Bofa posted a NCAA Division III qualifying mark in the 800-meter run for Whitworth, placing 11th in a time of 1:51.15.

Prep track & field

North Central sophomore Katie Knight earned Girls Athlete of the Meet honors after setting meet records in the one- and two-mile events at the New Balance Boise Indoor Classic meet.

Knight ran the two-mile race Friday in a time of 10:45.32 before setting her second meet record on Saturday in the mile in 5:08.84.

In the men’s field, North Central’s Casey Adams set a meet record in the mile with a time of 4:20.33.
