Sizemore back on DL

Grady Sizemore’s hard-nosed style of play could be coming with a price for the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians placed their center fielder back on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a bruised right knee. It’s his third stint on the DL this season, and sixth of his career. Sizemore was sent back to Cleveland to have tests done on his knee before making any estimates about how much time he will miss this time around.

“The way he plays and the way he goes about his business, he goes hard after it,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. “You’ve got to respect that. He’s not going to be taking it easy just to get healthy.”

The bruise on his kneecap has bothered Sizemore for much of the season. He initially hurt it on May 11 when he made a hard slide into second base.

Sizemore is hitting .237 in 61 games for the Indians.

Ezequiel Carrera will get most of the time in center field in Sizemore’s absence.

Tests done on Texas Rangers president Nolan Ryan showed no new heart problems for the Hall of Fame pitcher, who was hospitalized after experiencing discomfort over the weekend.

Ryan, 64, “continues to improve,” the Rangers said in a statement. He is expected to be released from a Houston hospital in a day or two.

Ryan has a pre-existing heart condition that will continue being treated with medication, according to the team’s statement. He had a double-bypass operation in 2000 and has a family history of heart disease.

Ortiz, Gregg begin reduced suspensions

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Baltimore Orioles closer Kevin Gregg began three-day suspensions after having their four-game suspensions reduced following an appeal.

Both players will sit out the entire series between Baltimore and Boston that runs through Wednesday. Ortiz and Gregg were given four-game suspensions on July 14 after nearly getting into a fight six days earlier at Fenway Park.
