MLK center book event starts Friday
EAST CENTRAL – The Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center, 845 S. Sherman St., will have its annual 24-hour Read-a-Thon on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m., as part of the Summer Youth Academy program.
The goal of “The Amazing Reading Race” is to have participants read 600 books in 24 hours. Barnes & Noble in Northtown Mall will join in the fun and hold a free children’s scavenger hunt, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday. School-age children are invited to follow the clues to special books, receiving a prize at the end of their hunt. Children may also listen to a story at storytime, held at 10 a.m. On Saturday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Barnes & Noble will have a free costume contest. Children, ages 4 to 12, are invited to dress up as their favorite storybook character. They will be judged in three age groups: 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. Prizes will be awarded in each category.
Proceeds from purchases made during the two-day event at Barnes & Noble will benefit the center. Customers who want to help may use the code #1050447 for any books, DVDs, music or cafe items in-store or online.
