Announced The on-again, off-again eligibility of Montana State running back Orenzo Davis is off again. Bobcats coach Rob Ash announced that Davis has failed to meet academic eligibility standards and will miss the 2011 season. Davis rushed for 1,126 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall. MSU first announced in January that the NCAA had declared Davis ineligible. MSU appealed and announced in February that he had been reinstated and was eligible for spring drills.
Introduced The new owner of the Detroit Pistons said Joe Dumars will remain the organization’s point man on basketball matters as the team tries to rebuild after missing the playoffs two straight seasons. Owner Tom Gores was introduced at The Palace, a day after completing an agreement to purchase the Pistons from Karen Davidson. Gores says he’ll “lean on” Dumars, the team president who has been part of all three of Detroit’s NBA titles as either a player or an executive.
Cleared Penguins center Sidney Crosby has been cleared by team doctors to start offseason, off-ice workouts. Crosby played his last game on Jan. 5, and did not return for the Penguins as he recovered from a concussion. Pittsburgh advanced to the playoffs without him, but lost in Round 1 to Tampa Bay in seven games.
Suspended The New York Liberty suspended Janel McCarville for the season because she didn’t join the team for training camp. The 6-foot-2 center averaged 11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in four seasons with the Liberty.
Unharmed Barcelona soccer star Lionel Messi was not hurt after a youngster threw a punch at him as he was leaving a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The youngster was part of a throng wanting Messi’s autograph, a witness told Argentine television. It was not clear if the punch landed or what the intent had been. Messi went on signing autographs.
Died Tennis Hall of Famer Pauline Betz Addie, the top women’s player in the United States in the 1940s, died Tuesday. She was 91. Addie, who had Parkinson’s disease, died at an assisted-living facility in Potomac, Md., the International Tennis Hall of Fame said.
