In brief: County pools open Friday for season

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane County’s North Side and South Side aquatic facilities open Friday.

The North Side facility, 18120 N. Hatch Road in Colbert, and the South Side facility, 3724 E. 61st Ave., are open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

Those 2 and under get in free; ages 3 to 5 pay $2; and ages 6 and older pay $4. A discount Punch Pass is $40.

With the Spokane Parks Foundation, Spokane County is a participant in the “Make a Splash in a Kids Life” program and will distribute swim passes to children from low-income households for entry.

To apply for a swim pass call Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf Department at (509) 477-4730, or visit the facilities during summer operating hours.

Shelters focus on cat adoption

SPOKANE COUNTY – June is national adopt-a-shelter-cat month and local animal shelters are asking residents to consider giving homeless cats and kittens much-needed homes.

SCRAPS, 2521 N. Flora Road in Spokane Valley, the Spokane Humane Society, 6607 N. Havana St., and SpokAnimal, 710 N. Napa St., have low-cost spay/neuter programs and adoption specials during the month of June.

Art walk highlights music, culture

SPOKANE – The International District Arts Walk will debut Friday and will be held the third Friday of each month. Members of the community can celebrate art, diversity and culture in the Spokane International District, on East Sprague Avenue between Helena and Crestline streets, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The family-friendly event will include art, literature, live music, dance demonstrations and children’s activities. Artists and musicians include Dan Harris, Jessica Raugust, Jessica LaPrade, Wonder Wonder, Bill Tierny and Friends, Tamerra Thompson, Priscilla Barnett, Denae, Clara Woods, Bruce Hormann and the Balloon Guy.
