End Notes

June 24 – Actor Peter Falk died Thursday at 83. Everyone knew him as Detective Columbo in the crime series, but I loved him best in the foreign film “Wings of Desire,” in which he plays an angel who had opted to fall from angelic status and live as a human being.
The movie, badly remade in the United States as “City of Angels,” made me hope that, indeed, angels hang out in libraries and on top of buildings and hear our cries of anguish and comfort in invisible ways. And maybe, some even join us here.
Falk was the perfect angel who chose mortality. In real life, he lives on indefinitely in his great works in television and in movies.

June 24 – In its Great American Outdoors Travel section, USA Today asked experts to choose “a great place to hike” – one per state. Quoth USA Today: “From sinuous, scenic paths to arduous, awe-inspiring treks, the country is ribboned with trails that beckon the casual and stalwart hiker alike.”
USA Today asked local experts to name one great place to hike in each state and the District of Columbia. The expert selected for the state of Idaho was Kellie Kluksdal/Idaho Division of Tourism. The “great place to hike” she picked was (drum roll, please) – Tubbs Hill on the Lake Coeur d’Alene waterfront, east of the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

June 22 – The Outdoor Writers Association of America has just awarded 12 Norm Strung Youth Writing prizes totaling $1,700 to young, talented writers who tackled outdoor themes in prose and poetry.
What’s particularly notable to me is that this may be the first time in a quarter century that no Inland Northwest teenager has been among the outdoor writing winners.
We had some good entries, and I was proud to publish the S-R’s area winners on Dec. 26. But the pool of entries has dwindled in recent years.

June 21 – Let me start this off by stipulating that I would rather be in Dante’s 14th circle of Hell than be a contestant on “Survivor” (and Dante only had nine).
But here’s an opportunity for the rest of you: A “Survivor” audition call, July 8 at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino.
