Flags at half staff for fallen U.S. marine

Flags are at half staff across Washington state today in remembrance of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Joe M. Jackson, who was from the Yakima Valley community of White Swan. The 22-year-old was killed April 24 during combat operations in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department. Over the weekend, Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered flags at half staff today. Jackson was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He’s among 1,461 U.S. military members killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
