FBLA students go to state

Future Business Leaders of America students at Central Valley High School attended the state conference in Spokane.

Cody Bafus and Shannon Hotchkiss won first place in the local chapter annual business report; Derek Bischoff won second place in Word Processing I; and David Yuan took third place in Introduction to Business.

Other students from CV who participated in the event were Beth Hotchkiss, Natasha Saric, Taptej Sidhu, Danica Beschta, Rachel Burk, Sophia Dien, Linnea Hall, Jordan Jalbert, Abigail Mansoor, Elizabeth Mansoor and Mariah Plumb.

The FBLA adviser at CV is Sherry Johnson.

Kudos

• Jesse Sheldon , a sophomore at Central Valley High School, was named a Distinguished Finalist in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Sheldon founded Inland NW Baby, a nonprofit that provides diapers, hygiene items, gently used clothing and more to children in need.

He was presented with the award April 28 during an assembly at his school.

• Spokane Teachers Credit Union recently recognized high school seniors with Focus Award scholarships.

Michael Barnhart of Central Valley High School received at $2,000 scholarship. He is president of DECA for Eastern Washington and plans to study accounting, sports management and secondary education at Gonzaga University this fall.

Sarah Henning and Elizabeth Mansoor, also from CV, received $100 savings bonds. Both plan to become teachers.

• Three community members in the Central Valley School District have been nominated for this year’s Northeast Washington Association of School Administrators Honorary Community Leadership Awards.

Brandie Evans is a founding member of Partners Advancing Character Education (PACE), and serves on the leadership team, marketing and curriculum committees.

She has brought many partners and sponsors to PACE and involves her KiDDS Dental Clinic staff in promoting good character.

Damon Smith served as the volunteer chair of the Central Valley Citizens for Education committee during the February 2011 construction bond campaign. He recruited focus-group volunteers, wrote letters to the editor, created marketing materials, placed phone calls and rang doorbells.

He owns DCI Engineers and serves as the current chairman of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Steve Wilson has been serving as vice president of PACE and is an active member of the sponsorship committee to raise financial support and organized the “Character Champions” guest speaker program.

Wilson is a retired NFL referee, a former youth pastor and a motivational speaker. He can be seen as “Referee Steve” in a monthly series of commercials highlighting the PACE character trait of the month.

Fundraisers

Freeman School District will present “Art and Soul,” Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Freeman High School, 14626 S. Jackson Rd., Rockford.

The event will feature an art show of 2010-’11 artwork from students, including watercolors, paper mosaics, acrylic paintings, sculptures and more. The public will be invited to participate in creating a large collaborative acrylic painting. Music students will provide music and there will be a booth featuring henna tattoos and face painting.

There will be demonstrations of the art process and a sale of original artwork and prints from noted local artists including Harold Balazs, Mel McCuddin and Ken Spiering.

Tickets will be available at the door for $5 per person or $15 per family.

• The University High School Senior All-Nighter Committee will present a Spring Golf Tournament May 15 at the Liberty Lake Golf Course, 24403 E. Sprague Ave.

The day will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Tickets are $30 per person or $90 per foursome and includes lunch, cart and greens fees.
