In brief: FIRST robotics event Saturday

SPOKANE VALLEY – West Valley High School and Eastern Washington University will host the FIRST Robotics Exhibition Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at WVHS, 8301 E. Buckeye Ave.

The event will feature a FIRST Lego League competition, exhibits and robotic demonstrations. FIRST is an acronym meaning For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

The day includes two rounds of FIRST Lego League “Body Forward” competition at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., a FIRST Robotics Competition demonstration by area high school teams from 10 to 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and information about starting FIRST programs from noon to 1 p.m. in the school library.

Japanese pianist performs tonight

WEST HILLS – Tomoko Narata, associate professor in the School of Music at Mukogawa Women’s University in Nishinomiya, Japan, will perform a free piano recital tonight at the Holy Names Music Center on the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute campus, 3910 W. Custer Drive, from 5:45 to 7 p.m. She will perform the works of Liszt and Rachmaninoff.

Soccer group seeks players

SPOKANE – Registration for the Inland Northwest Soccer Association’s 2011 season is now available. Several age-specific recreational leagues are available for women and men. Currently, the over-40 and over-50 women’s and men’s leagues are in need of additional players.

Red Cross offers lifeguard training

SPOKANE – The American Red Cross and the city of Spokane Parks and Recreation Aquatics will offer lifeguard training for ages 15 and older beginning Monday. Water Safety Instructor training, for ages 16 and older, will begin on May 23. The courses will give participants the skills to help keep people safe in, on and around water. Participants of the Water Safety Instructor training will become certified to teach children and adults how to swim and to give community water safety presentations.
