In brief: Four found dead at family’s home

From Wire Reports

San Diego – A family of four that included a 9-year-old girl and a high school senior was found dead Tuesday in a swimming pool and bathtub at their San Diego home in what police are calling an apparent triple murder-suicide.

The discovery stunned friends and neighbors in the quiet cul-de-sac, who described the four as a hardworking couple, a teenage daughter who was excited for prom and a younger girl who made friends easily.

San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert said the suspect was one of the four family members, but he declined to say which one. He said investigators found evidence of a murder-suicide after combing the home, but they were still working to determine a motive and were unsure exactly how the victims died.

Police identified the victims as Alfredo Pimienta, 44; his wife, Georgina Pimienta, 38; Priscilla Pimienta, 17; and Emily Pimienta, 9.

118 measles cases reported for year

Atlanta – Health officials say 118 cases of measles have been reported in the United States so far this year – the highest number this early in the year since 1996.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday released the count for Jan. 1 through May 20. Cases were seen in 23 states. None of the patients died, but about 40 percent were hospitalized.

The U.S. normally sees about 50 cases of measles in a year, thanks to vaccinations. About 90 percent of the cases this year were unvaccinated.

Measles is highly contagious, and up to 90 percent of people exposed to an infected person get sick. The virus spreads easily through the air, and in closed rooms, infected droplets can linger for up to two hours.
